in the way of views and actual experiences.
As some have read, we had our van totaled on May 6th. We are still dealing with the other's insurance company. I've never had an accident, so I don't know if this is right or not. We've been inconvenienced, ignored, lost wages & our reliable car, but happily L was not hurt.
After making a complaint with the BBB, plus our state insurance commisioner, we finally heard back from the insurance company's "district manager". This was after other claims adjusters sent mail to the wrong addresses, person, etc. They even had our van moved from the tow yard to a salvage yard without L's permission.
Anyway, she is the 1st one to finally try and get some kind of settlement to happen (I guess the BBB does work?). BUT, herein lies the predicament:
She will send the monies (WAY less than what we want) AFTER we mail her the title AND keys to their office in Texas??!!! Now, is that a practice that others have had?? Trust the snail mail after they couldn't even get letters AND a registered letter to us? Oh, yea.....they were "nice" enough to enclose a SA envelope, with no postage. She states that they have no office (and their local agents aren't equipped for this) for us to meet and exchange face to face (did we want to come to Houston?), and she/they have always dealt with settlements in this manner??? Sign the title and mail it? Send all keys through the mail? Uhhhhhh.....we don't think so!
Has anyone else settled a claim this way? Most I've talked to have met across the table from each other, and mutually exchanged the paperwork for the check. She then backed off somewhat and said they could send a "partial" payment to us, and when we mailed the rest of the documents and keys, they would send us the outstanding amount? Come on now! Is this right? Am I off base?
I need some feedback as I said, I've never been involved in an accident that had to be settled. Think I'll give our company a call tomorrow (they aren't handling this as we only had uninsured motorist's and we were not at fault) and see what they say, too.
As a topper, L found out this AM, that on Fri the car rental company they gave us for a week (not naming names.....enterprise....), pulled $152 out of L's account for collision insurance (which the ins. co. had told us they would cover), because the other's insurance company (...horace mann....) had still not paid the bill for the rental. NO authorization from L!
I'll quit. I get more p*ed the more I think about it! I have 2 1/2 days to myself to clean the place for the arrival of my bestest buddy, from Seattle, to visit!! I miss her!! And my kids! And my grandkids!! Only 3 more weeks until I get to Seattle to visit!!
Am anxious to read what others have to say about these practices concerning the settlement.
Enjoy! I think....
PS: Hey, Madeline!!!!!!! Miss you, too!
